Call for Papers

Salamanca, 7, 8 and 9 June 2023

With the term “Third Culture” John Brockman drew attention to the gap between the sciences and the humanities and encouraged scientists and intellectuals to construct a discourse that brings their areas of research closer together. At the 3rd International Congress of the East Asian Studies Association, we also want to promote the hybridization of knowledge as a result of the dialogue between disciplines, cultures, environments, and socio-economic contexts in the age of the Anthropocene.

The University of Salamanca will hold the 3rd International Congress of the AEEAO from 7 to 9 June 2023 and will host East Asian researchers in person. This congress has become the largest meeting point for experts in this field in Spain since the Spanish Forum on Asia-Pacific Research was launched in 2006 and the Association of East Asian Studies (AEEAO) was founded in 2016, with its first congress to be held two years later.

The creation of specialized bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral research lines in East Asian Studies in Spain, as a result of the growing and unstoppable interest in this field, has meant that the research community has grown ostensibly in recent years. The third edition of this conference aims to provide a venue for the exchange and dissemination of the results of their research. The Organizing Committee invites these researchers to present their proposals (in the form of a panel or paper) on any topic that fits into one of the following areas of knowledge:

  • Urbanism and Sustainability
  • Science and Innovation
  • History and Archaeology
  • History of Art and Cinema
  • Language and Translation
  • Literature
  • Philosophy and Thought
  • Politics and Economics
  • Sociology and Anthropology
  • Digital Humanities

Both panel and paper proposals must be written in Spanish or English, which will be the languages of communication at the congress, and must include title, author(s), objectives, methodology, results obtained or expected and bibliography, if applicable. The deadline for submission to the Scientific Committee is 15 November 2022. All proposals will be subject to blind peer review. Papers should not exceed 15 minutes in length.

Panel proposals must include a general abstract of 300-500 words (excluding bibliography), plus abstracts of 300-500 words for each of the papers that will participate in the panel. Each panel should be composed of four or five papers and it should be made clear who will be responsible for each of them. Acceptance of the panel does not guarantee acceptance of all the papers participating in it, which will be assessed individually. In the event that the number of participants is not met, the Organizing Committee may suggest changes.

Proposals for papers must include an abstract of between 300 and 500 words (excluding bibliography) and indicate the area of knowledge to which they belong. The Organizing Committee may suggest a change in the area of the paper if it considers it appropriate, in which case the interested parties will be informed in advance.

Registration fees:

  • Basic fee (EAEAO members): 110 € (dinner not included).
  • Basic fee (non-members of the AEEAO): 150 € (dinner not included)
  • Reduced fee for students without paper (only attendance with proper accreditation): 45 € (dinner not included)
